19

On Friday, November 12, I turned 19 years old. My birthday crept up on me this year, with me not thinking about it until my mom asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday. And as I turn 19 it is still weird to think about me being out of my teens, even if I still have a year left. Yet instead of talking about my 19th birthday, I find myself thinking more about my 18th birthday. Like most people (unless your birthday is before March) my 2020 birthday was a bit of a bummer. Due to the pandemic, I and the rest of my family wanted to keep each other safe. Meaning that I didn't get to spend my birthday with the people who had been there since I was a baby or my closest friends. There is one special moment from my 18th birthday, that I will never take for granted.

My grandpa, who had been exposed to COVID, drove past my house to see me for my birthday. He wasn't sick with COVID at the time and drove past my house with my cousin to say happy birthday. I stayed at my front door while he was looking at me through the passenger's seat. I remember being so happy to see him. This would be the last time I saw him in person, with his passing of COVID shortly after Thanksgiving. I think back to that moment a lot, how I didn't know this would be my last time seeing him. This will always be a moment I will share, a little twinkle of light on a sad day.

This year even though my 19th birthday was a different experience. That being with the new addition to our family. My niece Zamara, who is 5 months old. They always do say death brings new life.

  1. That is such a heartwarming and at the same time, a very sad story. I am very sorry to hear about your grandpa. By the way, I must say that you do a very good job of writing with emotion.

  2. happy belated birthday! I'm sorry for the loss of your grandpa, I lost mine at the end of 2019, before COVID hit. I'm happy you had a great memory of him before he passed.
