Favorite Film

Since I have talked about my favorite book on here, I thought it was only fair to talk about my favorite film. Asking someone what their favorite movie is, is usually a difficult question for them to answer, but not for me. Above is a still from the 1989 film Dead Poets Society Dir. Peter Weir. The film follows a group of boys in a preparatory high school in 1959 Vermont. The movie is considered an 80s classic and even won an Oscar in 1990 for Best Original Screenplay. It is currently streaming for free with ads on YouTube.

I first saw this movie in 2018 after watching the popular TV sitcom, Community. In one of the first episodes, The main character Jeff has a teacher that acts just like Robin William's character John Keating. And at the time I had never seen the movie, so in order to get more of the jokes, I found the movie on Netflix and put the movie on. I remember watching the movie and asking myself " Where's Matt Damon? " And was about 30 minutes into the movie when I realized the difference between Dead Poets Societ and Good Will Hunting. But as I finally distinguished the two from each other, I was able to fall in love with the movie in front of me.

The movie starts with a new school year at Welton Academy. Todd, played by Ethan Hawke starts at the school and is roommates with Neil, played by Robert Sean Lenord. The school around them is very strict and each of the boys in this film seems very afraid of the headmaster, Mr. Nolan. This changed when new English teacher John Keating He begins teaching them how to be free thinkers, which at this time was not common for young people. Even if they were young men. The boys later learn their teacher who was once a Welton student, was a member of the Dead Poets Society. Neil decides to restart the club for him and his friends, leading them to read poetry late at night and deep in the woods. Through the Dead Poets Society and Mr. Keating, Neil discovers his love for acting. He even gets a role as Punk in a performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream. Now in order to not spoil anything else, this is where I'll stop summarizing.

I will now talk about the impact it had on me for such a long time. When I first saw this movie I was a freshman in High School. I felt myself relating a lot to Todd, who was new to his school. My freshman year I was a bit shy until I found myself a great group of friends just as Todd did. Now as I enter my freshman year of college I find myself relating to Todd once more in the same sense. I hope I find myself a group of friends just as Todd did. And I urge you to see this movie if you haven't. This blog post isn't doing the movie the justice it deserves. Yet I would like to know, what is your favorite movie?

  1. I have never heard of that movie but I will have to give it a watch some time. It definitely sounds interesting. You pose a very difficult question that I don't think that I can answer, I have no idea what my favorite movie is.

  2. Serena, I'll have to watch this movie when I get a chance! I know for me, there's a handful of movies that'd I watch over and over again. I'm glad you got to relate to the character and that's probably a part of why it's your favorite, because you can put yourself in the situation. I'd say one of my favorite movies is, "Love Don't Cost a Thing," or any rom-com or movie with Kevin Hart and The Rock in it hahah.

  3. So Great! Also from Weir is Picnic at Hanging Rock. It's an artsy, ambiguous MUST SEE!! Once you see it, you'll see how many fashion mag ads are based upon it.
