My favorite book.

I have read countless books throughout my 18 years, but it was only this year when I came across the author Taylor Jenkins Reid. She is most notable for writing the smash 2017 book titled 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.' Her follow-up 'Daisy Jones & The Six' follows a rock band throughout the 70s through their rise to fame and subsequent breakup on July 12, 1979. The book is written as a transcript, as a journalist decades after their break-up speaks with the members. In an attempt to see what it was like being in the biggest rock band of the 70s. Now when reading this post you might ask yourself " Why have I never heard of this band? " That's the thing, they don't exist. In both books (The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six) you follow these made-up celebrities, yet they feel so real! There were instances where I found myself looking up members of Daisy Jones & The Six because I simply forgot they weren't real.

The book is heavily inspired by the real-life 70s rock band, Fleetwood Mac, more specifically the relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Without giving anything away you get to see the development of a beautiful relationship between our main character Daisy Jones and the frontman of The Six, Billy Dunne. This book does deal with heavy topics, things like, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, and cheating, but in a tasteful, mature, and real way. It also has complex characters, characters who might not always do the right thing but do learn something from their mistakes in the end.

Reid's books always center around women, from her first book to her most recent, titled 'Malibu Rising.' It is always so refreshing to be able to see complex female characters front and center. Female characters who might not always do right but are so much more than any decision they ever make. This makes reading her books so much more beneficial. And the most beneficial is that the 3 books I mentioned all take place inside the same universe. So even though Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones don't truly exist, you will see them being nodded to in other books that take place inside this particular universe. Which for the readers is exciting to see a character from another book being referenced in the book you are currently reading.

This book has changed my life. It made me fall back into love with not only the writing style of Taylor Jenkins Reid but for writing and reading too. I could not recommend this book enough. And it is currently being made into a Mini-series for Amazon Prime. Starring 'Zola' star Riley Keough as Daisy Jones and 'The Hunger Games' actor Sam Claflin as Billy Dunne. This small spoiler-free review does the book no justice but maybe in a future blog post, I will talk about the book in all its glory with spoilers. Please let me know if you've read it, I could talk about it for days!

  1. After reading your post about this book it makes me wanna read it. I think it's so interesting how an author can make up these celebrities and make them feel real. I feel like in most books you can tell when it is not a real person. Most of the books I have read are centered around women so I think I might like this book It's always nice to have complex female characters. Also It's amazing how all these three books are taken in the same universe. I feel like a lot of authors don't tend to do that very often. Authors usually just write one book then move on to the next and have no connection. I was wondering what book out of the three should I read first? Should I read it by the order they came out?

    1. I read Daisy Jones & The Six first and this was before I knew they were all in the same universe. It didn't hinder my experience in any way so it's really up to you. With that being said I would definitely recommend you her newest book Malibu Rising last since it definitely connects the three the most. It also has the most nod to her two previous books in the universe. :)
